RAYMOND "RAGS" MATTHEWS
END 1925-27
TCU’s first All-American was not above talking trash, but his words were backed up by his play. Prior to a Matthews-led goal line stand to preserve a scoreless tie with undefeated Texas A&M, Matthews hollered at the Aggie huddle, “Y’all got the guts to run my way?” Matthews twice earned all-conference honors in football, in 1926 and 1927. He was also a talent on the basketball court, starting for the Frog cagers all three of his varsity seasons and earning all-conference honors in 1925-26. He accomplished another TCU first in 1928 by representing the Horned Frogs at the East-West Shrine game.
