The student-produced magazine Image was named the Best Student Magazine in the Nation for 2006 by the Society of Professional Journalists. Go to www.image.tcu.edu to see the latest issue.

Research award

Larry D. Lauer, vice chancellor for Marketing and Communication, received the Alice L. Beeman Research Award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education at CASE's annual Summit in July. The award citation noted that Lauer's latest book, Advancing Higher Education in Uncertain Times, is CASE's newest bestseller and that he has helped numerous institutions develop integrated marketing initiatives in the United States, Canada, South America, the United Kingdom and elsewhere around the world.

National honor

David Jenkins, TCU associate professor of social work, is one of 12 geriatric social work professionals nationally to be named a 2007 Hartford Faculty Scholar by the Gerontological Society of America. Jenkins will receive $100,000 for research and professional development. His specialty area is gay grandparents.

Global business award

The Neeley School of Business was presented the 2007 Fort Worth Mayor's Global Business Award in May, which recognizes excellence in international business. Neeley was one of three winners chosen from 35 nominated organizations based in Tarrant County. Neeley was selected for its commitment to meeting the global challenge and successfully competing in the world marketplace.

Making customers stand in line doesn't have to chase away business, says a recent study by Neeley researcher Julie Baker and colleagues at three other universities. According to the study, customers won't mind waiting if the business:

•Fills customers' time with engaging distractions in the waiting room (providing reading material, television shows or fish tanks, etc.)
•Allays anxieties by reassuring the worried
•Makes sure the waiting procedures are equitable
•Pays extra attention to loyal repeat customers
•Ensures the waiting area is comfortable and attractive
